A student in one of the college classes I teach showed me a neat gadget a few days ago. He has a “fit” phone. His Sony cell phone acts as a pedometer. It records the steps he takes during the day. He can enter in his weight and his average stride length and it will also approximate the number of calories he has burned and the number of miles he has walked.

Many of you have used a pedometer for the same purpose. A fitness recommendation is to accumulate 10,000 steps per day. For the average stride length, that is about 5 miles.

The best thing about the pedometer and the “fit” phone is the motivation factor. Many of my students and clients have become motivated to move more just by seeing the number of steps add up. The “fit” phone is especially convenient because so many people are wearing them anyway and pedometers are fun for kids.

What motivates you?
